The Weight of the World
“You can't lift the weight for them, only carry it beside them.”
Late afternoon, on the back porch steps. Bella is cleaning an old grooming brush, almost without noticing.
Dadsitting down next to her, leaving some spaceHey. Thanks for coming out here to sit with me. I know you were right in the middle of drawing.
Belladoesn't look up right away, keeps turning the brush in her handsIt's fine. Mom said you wanted to talk about the meeting you had this morning.
DadYeah. I did. I wanted you to hear it straight from me, not just pieces of it through the wall. You know how things have been stressful at my company lately? Well, today they made a final decision, and my job is officially gone.
Bellastops moving the brush, looks at himSo... it's real? You don't have to go back there on Monday?
DadIt's real. And because of that, we have to make some big adjustments while I look for what's next. Some things are going to change, and I know one of those changes is going to hurt the most. We can't keep paying for the riding lessons at the barn right now. And if I have to take a job in a different city, we might have to move.
Bellalooks down at her shoes, her voice gets small, then sharpBut Eclipse's lease is up next month. If we don't pay, someone else is going to ride him. He won't even remember me if we move away.
Dadnods, resisting the urge to say it'll be okayI know. You've worked so hard with him, and you finally got him to stop skirting the jumps. It's incredibly unfair.
Bellastands up, crosses her armsGrown-ups always say things like "adjustments" or "it's just a transition." To you, it's just a job you didn't even like that much. But Eclipse is my actual friend. The barn is the only place where everything makes sense. You're just cancelling it like it's a streaming subscription.
Dadtakes a breath, validating, not defendingYou're right. I used a corporate word for something that feels like your whole world is being pulled out from under you. To me, it's a budget line. To you, it's your community, your passion, and a horse you love. I'm not treating it like a hobby, kiddo. I know it's part of who you are.
Bellablinking back tears, angryThen why can't we just sell something else? Why does it always have to be the things I care about? And if we move, it's not just Eclipse. I lose co-op, and the microschool, and all my friends, all at once. I'd have to start completely over. That's not an "adjustment," Dad. That's completely ruining my life.
Dadstays seated, voice calm and steadyIt feels exactly like that. If I were eleven and someone told me I had to leave my friends and the thing I loved most, I'd think my life was ruined too. I'm not going to tell you "it's for the best," or that you'll make new friends, because right now that sounds like garbage. It just hurts. And I am so, so sorry that my job is what's causing this.
Bellalooks at him, the anger softening just a little because he didn't argueAre we really going to leave?
DadI don't know yet. I'm going to try everything I can to find something close to home. But I promised I'd always be honest with you. Moving is a real possibility.
Bellasits back down, a bit further away, pulling her knees to her chestI don't want to talk about it anymore today.
DadWe don't have to. You don't have to fix this, and you don't have to be okay with it. I'm right here if you want to be mad about it again tomorrow.
Bella nods slightly, looking out at the yard, still holding the grooming brush tight.
